Healthcare as a Commodity: The Dehumanization of the Working Class

By Luigi Mangione

Private health insurance commodifies healthcare, transforming it from a human right into a privilege reserved for those who can pay. This dehumanization is not incidental; it is central to the capitalist project. My act was a defiant rejection of a system that reduces lives to spreadsheets and profits.

When healthcare is treated as a commodity, the working class suffers disproportionately. Workers face endless hoops to access care, from pre-authorizations to coverage denials, all while insurance executives reap obscene salaries. This is the stark reality I sought to challenge, and my actions sparked a broader conversation about the morality of such a system.

The Marxist response to my act on social media was overwhelmingly supportive, with many pointing out that the capitalist healthcare model is inherently exploitative. They recognized that my action, though radical, was a call to prioritize people over profits. The path forward is clear: healthcare must be reclaimed as a collective good, free from the shackles of market forces.
