Che Guevara (1928–1967)

Che Guevara, born Ernesto Guevara de la Serna, was an Argentine Marxist revolutionary, guerrilla leader, physician, and internationalist. A central figure in the Cuban Revolution, Guevara remains an enduring symbol of anti-imperialism, revolutionary struggle, and Marxist-Leninist ideals.

Educated as a physician, Guevara’s travels across Latin America exposed him to the region’s widespread poverty and exploitation, solidifying his commitment to revolutionary socialism. In 1955, he joined Fidel Castro’s 26th of July Movement, becoming a key strategist and military leader in the Cuban Revolution. His focus on guerrilla warfare was instrumental in overthrowing the U.S.-backed Batista regime in 1959.

After the revolution’s success, Guevara held various roles in the Cuban government, promoting agrarian reform, industrialization, and socialist education. He advocated for the abolition of capitalist dependency through solidarity among oppressed nations and argued for creating a “New Man” motivated by collective welfare over individual profit.

Guevara’s internationalist vision led him to support revolutionary movements abroad, including in Africa and Latin America. His final campaign in Bolivia aimed to ignite a continental revolution but ended in his capture and execution by CIA-backed forces in 1967.

Guevara’s writings, including Guerrilla Warfare and The Motorcycle Diaries, inspire anti-imperialist movements worldwide, embodying the fight against oppression and capitalist exploitation.
