Bolshevik Revolution (October 1917)
The Bolshevik Revolution, also known as the October Revolution, marked a decisive turning point in world history. Led by Vladimir Lenin and the Bolshevik Party, this event overthrew the Provisional Government in Russia, establishing the world’s first socialist state and setting the foundation for the Soviet Union.
The revolution was rooted in the contradictions of a society wracked by imperialist war, economic inequality, and widespread discontent among workers, peasants, and soldiers. After the February Revolution earlier in 1917 toppled Tsar Nicholas II, the Provisional Government failed to address key demands: peace, land redistribution, and workers’ control of production. The Bolsheviks, with slogans like “Peace, Land, and Bread,” gained mass support by articulating these aspirations.
On October 25 (November 7, Gregorian calendar), the Bolsheviks, supported by workers’ militias and revolutionary soldiers, seized power in Petrograd. The revolutionary overthrow was relatively bloodless, as the Provisional Government offered little resistance. Lenin immediately implemented decrees on peace and land, withdrawing Russia from World War I and redistributing land to the peasantry.
The Bolshevik Revolution was not merely a national event but a signal to the international working class that socialism was achievable. It inspired revolutionary movements worldwide, despite later challenges, including the Civil War and foreign interventions.
